Look at a book.
Ever been flipping through the pages of a book and stumble upon a picture that was worth framing? So have we! Walk through any art section of your local book store and you’ll see page after page of gorgeous, glossy art, good enough to be on a wall!
OK-don’t shell out full price for the book. And, no, don’t rip out a page when no one is looking! March yourself down to the nearest used book store or thrift store and get ready to get dusty. Old books are an amazing resource for artwork. Our latest find: an old 1940’s volume of children’s poetry with the cover missing but charming, vivid illustrations inside. Perfect for a very chic and playful kid’s room.
Cruise the how-to and almanac aisles for great flower, fruit and vegetable illustrations for your kitchen. The more unusual, the better. And don’t stop with old books—many thrift stores house old dress patterns complete with illustrations. A designer’s home office with a framed 1970’s pantsuit pattern over the desk? Yes, awesome does come to mind.
Feeling a little sorry for the old books you’re about to rip up? Well hold it right there—seriously, hold it right there—on a book stand or in a stack. Old books make fabulous accessories—they’re a great way to express your individuality and they lend an air of ‘learning’ to a space. So if you can’t bring yourself to rip it up, put the whole thing on display.
Magazines are people, too.
We don’t always think of displaying the contents of a magazine but when it’s done the right way…
We salvaged a vintage 1984 collection of Bazaar magazines from the trash for our friend headed to NY to work in the world of fashion. Framed in shadowbox style, a collection of 9 Bazaar magazines suspended on white, 3 down, 3 across are absolutely striking and oh-so-fashionable.
The only thing you’ll spend any money on is the frame–and there are even chic, budget conscious ways to get around that. But that’s another article…
